In June of 2004, recording began for the "Revelations" album.
The material was written and the final pieces of Bulldog Studios had finally
been put in place. Rather than
simply record in order, however, the decision was made to record four songs
which could show the overall sound and vision of the album as well as stand
on their own as plausible singles. A lot of schedule shifting had
to occur to bump up "Winner Take All" which appears much later on the album
than it does here.
The music for each song was recorded in one full day. There were
few hitches in the process, except when listening back to one of the tracks
it was discovered that one of the guitars was slightly out of tune, forcing
a re-record of virtually all rhythm guitar parts and all the leads for
"Winner Take All." Three days were spent recording vocals (one day
for backing vocals and then two lead parts a day).
Mixing and mastering proved to be a more time consuming process. Three of
the songs required editing in order to eliminate the transition from and/or
to the previous and next songs ("Revelations" is an album in which all
songs blend from one to another). "In Your Arms (Tonight)" went under
the knife the most, deleting almost three full minutes from the album version
of the song. All told it took 10 days to mix and master the demo
to CD.
It definitely must be noted that this demo has no title. It's
not self titled, it's not called "untitled," it's called nothing.
Also, there exists a copy with a fifth song, "Don't Let Me
Go" which is not from the "Revelations" album at and was recorded and mixed
nearly a year later. As far as I know (and as it should be), only
two copies exist of this version.
The cover came from an image I found at
Unicorn Lady and was chosen
because of the way it ties into the cover for "Revelations."
Overall I was very pleased with the sound of the demo and was thrilled
to hear these songs I had been working on for years not only finally come
together, but come together with such a professional sound.
